Charles A. Martin, Jr. 90, Topeka, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016.
He was born November 28, 1925, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Charles and Marie (Glover) Martin. He attended Topeka Public Schools and graduated from Washburn University with a bachelor's degree in Advertising & Public Relations. While there he was a member of Phi Delta fraternity.
Charles sold advertising for the Topeka Capital Journal, dressed the window fronts at Ray Beers and worked in advertising for the Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka, Los Angeles and Chicago, retiring after 40 years. He traveled 20 straight years to New Mexico for the Annual Indian Tribal fair from which he collected many Southwestern Treasures. He also traveled with a small model railroad module to promote travel to the Southwest. He was a member of the National Railway Historical Society and the Topeka Model Railroad Club. He also was a member of the Topeka Optimist Club.
He began his Christian journey with his baptism by Dr. Charles Sheldon and then as a youth he sang in Grace Cathedral Boys Choir. He was a current member of Faith Lutheran Church where he sang in the church choir and did church advertising.
In 1960, he married Carol (Virginia) Creitze and to this union Charles H. Martin was born. She passed away when Charles was 2 ½ years old. In 1967, he married Bette Byrne and her daughter Susan completed the family. They later divorced. Then in 1998, he married Shirley (Diehl) Voss. She survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Susan (Mark) Allshouse, their sons, Jonathan and Brandon; son, Charles H. (Christine) Martin, their children, Olivia and Ian; step-daughter, Brenda (Mike) Beaudoin, their son Kyle; step-son, David (Patricia) Voss, their children Christopher Ryan (Holly) Voss, Cristen (Jason) English, their children, Jozelyn & Jayelyn, Kai (Ashton) Lukowiak & Christopher (Jamie) Lukowiak; his sister, Mary Lou (Jim) Metzger, their son Jamie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marjorie Hicks-Snyder.
Viewing will be at 10:00 a.m., funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 8 at Faith Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
