Charleen D. Howell, 97, Topeka, died Sunday, April 8, 2007 at her home.
She was born Dec. 27, 1909 in Longton, Kansas, the daughter of Hugh and Bertha Mae Woodmen Belcher. She was raised in Oklahoma City, and had lived in Topeka since January, 1932.
Charleen worked as an accountant and payroll clerk for Beatrice Foods both in Oklahoma City and also in Topeka for over 40 years, before retiring in 1970.
She was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church, Philip Billard Post #1650 Auxillary, Women of the Moose #555, and Helena Chapter #210 O.E.S. She and her husband were active in the Sunshine Sams and Alley Cats Camping Clubs.
She married Fred Deppe who preceded her in death in 1960. She married R. Byron Howell on March 18, 1966 in Topeka. He died Sept. 20, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley S. Howell on March 20, 1992.
Survivors include three sons, Bryon H. Howell and wife, Joan of Topeka, Robert N. Howell of Ft. Collins, CO and Jerry L. Howell; grandchildren, Capt. Jeffrey Blake Howell and wife, Shelly, Byron Todd Howell and wife, Jennifer, Chad Dustin Howell, Cory Michael Howell, Angela Dawn Rankin and husband, David; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew, William "Bill" Kenney.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Entombment will be in Mt. Hope Mausoleum. Mrs. Howell will lie in state after 9:00 am Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
