Cecil N. "Pete" Peterson, 91, Topeka, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
He was born Oct. 6, 1912 in McPherson, the son of J.W. and Ecedra Peterson. He graduated from McPherson High School and from Washburn University where he was a four year letterman in basketball, was captain of the team and a member of Sagamore. He was a Kappa Sigma and remained an active alimni throughout his life. He enjoyed officiating high school and college football and basketball.
Pete joined the Union Central Life Insurance Company in 1934 and remained active with that company for over 60 years - becoming manager of the firm's Kansas agency in 1967. In 1976 he was named Kansas Life Insurance Man of the Year by the Kansas Association of Life Underwriters.
He served on the Washburn University Board of Regents from 1954 to 1967. He served as president of the Washburn Alumni Association and as a trustee of the Washburn Endowment Association. He was co chair of the "Making A Difference" capital campaign in the early 1980's which raised over $23.3 million. He received the Washburn Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 1971 and was elected to the WU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981. In 1993, he received the Washburn Service Award for his dedication to the University.
He was a member and past-president of the Downtown Topeka Rotary Club, a member of the YMCA Board of Trustees and member and chairman of the board at First United Methodist Church.
He married Helen Lyon in 1935. She died in 1967. He married Marvel Bowlus in 1970. She survives. Other survivors include a son, John Peterson, Topeka; a daughter, Sandra Hughes, Lewisville, TX; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:00 pm Monday in Klasse Chapel at First United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Peterson will lie in state from 9 am to 9 pm Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church; Washburn University for the Cecil N. Peterson athletic scholarship fund; or the organization of the donor's choice.
