Cecil Earl Welcher, 97, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Plaza West with his wife, Johnetta by his side. He was born February 7, 1917 in rural Douglas County, KS, the son of Clarence A. and Susan Coffman Welcher.
Cecil graduated from Lecompton High School in 1936. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving from 1940 - 1948. He was employed by the Kansas Turnpike Authority for 26 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 420 AF & AM in Lecompton, Philip-Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W. and was of the Methodist faith. Cecil was a strong member of the Democratic Party and enjoyed visiting with his friends regarding politics and other daily happenings at McDonalds twice a week. He also enjoyed gardening.
Cecil married Johnetta Sierer on June 15, 1991 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Viola Sweet of Spokane, WA, Evelyn Code of Blue Springs, MO, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Herrington and Gaye Tremble.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Private committal will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Lecompton, KS. Cecil will lie in state from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the funeral home.
