Catherine M. Dean, 85, of Topeka, passed to her Lord and Savior on Friday June 3 Saint Francis Hospital.
She was born October 17, 1919 in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine Beran Novotny.
She attended school through the 8th grade, but had to leave school to help support the family. She held various jobs, one of which was in the Boing Aircraft Plant in Baltimore during World War II, where she met and married Robert Dean. After the war, the family returned to Kansas. She worked at several restaurants in the Topeka area. She then went to work as a nurses aide at Brewster Place Retirement Community, retiring after many years. She had many hobbies, loved to play Bingo and crochet, and was an avid gardener.
She married Robert Dean during the early part of World War II. They later divorced. She was preceded in death by a infant daughter, Barbara, another daughter, Anna Dean, and three brothers.
Survivors include two sons, William and Robert Dean, both of Topeka; one daughter, Mary Dodson of Topeka, and three grandchildren of Topeka; three sisters, Marie Mezewski, Tillie Reid and Josephine Patro, of Baltimore, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Dean will lie in state after 2:00 pm, Thursday June 9 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am at St. Matthews Catholic Church with burial to follow in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
