Carver D. Long, 79, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away May 19, 2011, at his home in Topeka.
He was born Sept. 26, 1931, the second son of Charles Edward and Ellen Evelyn (Beckley) Long. He attended school in Topeka, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1951. After graduation, he went to work at Armco Steel Corp. His employment was interrupted by the Korean conflict and he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1952, serving one year as a jet mechanic in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and returned to his job at Armco Steel, retiring after 31 years.
He married Ruth Rencin on Jan. 23, 1955 in Barnes, Kan., Ruth's hometown. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served many years in Topeka as a bishop and stake president. Carver and Ruth served a mission for their Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. Recently they served in the church's Winter Quarters Temple near Omaha, Neb., including three years in the temple presidency.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth; son David and wife Colleen of Beaumont, Texas; daughter, Cindy Wang and husband Mark of Eagle, Idaho; son, Gary and wife Kim of San Antonio, Texas; son, Alan and wife Gayle of Payson, Utah; two brothers, Charles (Judy) of San Jose, Calif., and Tom (Lorraine) of Topeka; sister, Mary Ellen Vausbinder (John) of Topeka; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 23, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3611 S.W. Jewell Ave. in Topeka, with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka. A viewing for family and friends will be at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave. in Topeka, on Sunday evening, May 22, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the Church prior to the funeral on Monday, from 1:00-1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, The American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
