Bertha Caroline Barfknecht Rayburn died July 12, 2011 at Brewster Place in Topeka. She was born on April 25, 1916 in Pipestone, Minnesota, attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Alpha Rho chapter.
In 1944 she enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was sent to duty at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, the Brooklyn Naval Hospital in Brooklyn, New York and the Hospital Corps School in Bainbridge, Maryland.
In 1946 she assumed administrative duties for the radioisotope laboratory at the VA Hospital in Van Nuys, California.
In 1949 she married Dr. Frederick W. Rayburn, MD in Van Nuys, California. He died in 1990.
She received a master in education as a reading specialist from Washburn University and worked as a substitute teacher in the Topeka area. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Alumni Chapter in Topeka, the Kansas Authors Club, Topeka Literacy Council and the Nobelles, Eastern Star, Beulah Chapter #34.
Survivors include her children, Margaret Rayburn Kramar, Lecompton; Marion Rayburn Taylor, Lenexa, F. William"Bill" Rayburn, Topeka, and five grandchildren.
Cremation is planned and inurnment will be in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Memorial services will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday August 6, 2011 at Brewster Place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Washburn Endowment Association for the Dr. Frederick Walker and Carolyn B. Rayburn PreMed/Nursing Scholarship Fund, 1700 SW College, Topeka, Kansas 66621. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
