Carlene Hutcheson, 74, of Topeka, KS, went to be with her Lord on January 10, 2014, after a yearlong struggle with various health issues.
She was born on January 25, 1940, in Topeka, KS, to Rev. Thomas and Marjorie Hutcheson of Denison, KS. In 1949, her family moved to the island of Cyprus, where her parents were missionary teachers.
Following her childhood in Cyprus, Carlene graduated from Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, KS, in 1957, and was a 1961 graduate of Geneva College.
Carlene dedicated her career to educating children. She worked as an elementary school teacher in Park City, KS, and in Topeka, KS. Upon her retirement in 2000, Carlene continued to be active in various retired teachers' organizations, the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, and Meals on Wheels.
Carlene was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Elizabeth Hutcheson. She is survived by her brother Tom Hutcheson and wife Sue; niece Christi Hutcheson; niece Karen Montemayor and husband Jim; nephew Jim Hutcheson; grandniece Rachel Montemayor; and grandnephews Luke and Nate Montemayor. Her godly spirit, thoughtfulness, and generosity will be missed by her many relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Street, Topeka, KS. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 17 at 10 am at the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, 8345 SW 33rd Street, Topeka, KS 66614.
A graveside service will be held at Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Kansas at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Carlene's memory to Geneva College, Institutional Advancement, 3200 College Avenue, Beaver Falls, PA 15010; or the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church.
