CARL A SEUFERT, JR
Carl A. Seufert, Jr., 71, died December 6, 2002, at his home, in Topeka. . Carl was born in Lawrence, Kansas July 30, 1931, the son of Carl A. and Harriettte(Gulley) Seufert.
Carl retired in August, 2000 from Mt. Hope Cemetery where he served as Executive Director 7 and one half years. Before that he was a member of the Board of Directors.
Carl graduated from Topeka High School in 1949 and was President of the Student Council and active in Thespians. He graduated from Washburn University with a BBA and a BA degree. He served as President of Alpha Delta Fraternity and was currently a member of the Alpha Delta Alumni Board. At Washburn he was a member of Sagamore and Business Manager of the KAW yearbook and was selected to be in the Who's Who Among Students publication.
He earned his USAF commission through the Washburn University ROTC unit and completed 22 years service with the USAF and the Air Guard. As a 2nd Lt. In the Air Force, he attended pilot training in Columbus, Mississippi and then went to basic training in Lubbock, Texas. He spent 2 years as a pilot of the giant 10-engine RB 36 at Fairchild AFB near Spokane, Washington. Then he was assigned to Forbes AFB where he flew the KC-97 tanker. From April, 1961 until his military retirement, Carl flew the C-47, C-97, and KC-97 aircraft with St. Joseph, Missouri 180th Air Refueling Squadron. These assignments took him to Greece, Japan, Spain, Formosa, Germany, and Southeast Asia. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service 14 April 1962 to 30 April 1976 He earned the rank of Major in the Air Force and had more than 6, 000 flying hours. He also worked for 35 years selling life, accident, and health insurance.
His community' activities included being a past vestry member of St. David's Episcopal Church and an elder of Trinity Presbyterian. Carl served as President of the YMCA Board and President of the YMCA Foundation Board. He was a former member of the active 20-30 Club, a charter member of Topeka West Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Washburn Ichabod Club and a lifetime member of the Washburn Alumni Association and the Jayhawker Club. He was an avid Washburn basketball fan and a member of the American Legion and Orient Lodge No. 52, Scottish Rite bodies, Arab Shrine Legion of Honor Unit and Royal Order of Jesters. Carl was on the Board of the Jayhawk Council of the Boy Scouts for many years and on the Board of the Boys' Club. He also served as President of the McCarter PTA.
He was married to Fulva Atherton Seufert January 25, 1953. She survives. Also surviving is a son, Scott James Seufert, Jacksonville, Oregon, his mother, Harriette Seufert, Topeka, KS, one brother, Frank Seufert, Wamego, KS, and one sister, Helen Knierim, Scottsdale, AZ. A son, Steven Jeffery Seufert preceded him in death September 7, 2000.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2002 at St. David's Episcopal Church, Topeka. Private inurnment at Mt. Hope Mausoleum will precede the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Carl A. Seufert Memorial Fund at St. David's Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th Street, Topeka, Kansas 66604 or to the Carl A. Seufert Memorial Fund at the YMCA, 421 Van Buren, Topeka, Kansas 66603. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
