Carl O. Dell, Jr. of Topeka, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Stormont-Vail Health Center. Carl was born on October 4, 1927, in Garden City, Kansas, son of Carl O. Dell, Sr. and Pearl Miller Dell. He and Patricia Johnson were married on August 20, 1977, in Topeka. She preceded him in death in 2006.
He is survived by one sister Alice Coleman and husband Russell of Warrensburg, MO, nephew Ronald Coleman and wife Tina of St. Louis, MO, niece Allison McGuire and husband Daniel of Long Beach, CA, and great-nephew Christian Coleman of St. Louis, MO.
Carl graduated from Leona, KS High School in 1945. He attended Highland Junior College and graduated from McPherson College in 1949, and earned a Master's degree from the University of Kansas in Counseling and Psychology. Carl served two years in Japan and Korea during the Korean War in the 45th Division Army Band. He spent his career working in the Personnel Division for the State of Kansas retiring in 1991.
Carl enjoyed music, playing trombone in the Topeka Big Band and the Arab Temple Shrine Band. He sang in quartets during college. He loved cars, especially Jaguars, fishing, photography and making silver jewelry and pottery. His family and friends remember him most for his great sense of humor and friendly smile.
He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at Brewster Place Chapel, 1205 SW 29th Street, Topeka.
Entombment will follow at Mount Hope Mausoleum. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
