Mr. Carl A. Williams, Jr. age 83, died June 8, 2003 at a local hospital. He was the son of Carl Williams and Geneva Jackson. He was born and raised in Topeka, KS. He was a graduate of Topeka public schools and graduated from Kansas Vocational Training Center. Mr. Williams received an Associates Degree from Washburn University. He was a member of St. John A.M.E. Church.
Mr. Williams was a long time state employee having worked as field inspector for the Kansas Dept. of Revenue, Tax examiner and Supervisor at Topeka State Hospital, Correctional Supervisor for Kansas Vocational Training Center and retired as a Lieutenant Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center . After retiring, he worked for the Kansas Senate as a doorman, then went to the Kansas Supreme Court as a bailiff.
He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific. Mr. Williams was co-founder of the "Topeka Back Home Reunion", past commander and co-founder of Jordan Patterson Post #319 and Charter member (Last to survive) of the Elk's Club #1441 in Topeka.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla June Williams in 1954 and a brother Claude Eugene "Baby" Williams in 1995.
In March 1948, he married Wanda Beard. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Jean Harper and her husband Tommy Harper, Sunya Williams Folayan, Tanya Stewart-Vann and her husband Tommy Vann. Eight Grandchildren, Bryenne Fawn Imani McLaughlin, Carlos Stewart, Jasmin Stewart, Dorian Stewart, Josiah Stewart, Julian Vann, Surya Swilley and Jadrien Williams-Vann. Two Great Grandchildren, Ta'Von Carter and D'Amonte Stewart.
Mr. Williams enjoyed his family; traveling, fishing and socializing, among many pastimes and had a host of enduring friendships throughout his lifetime.
On Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town beginning at Noon, he will lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be Friday, June 13, 2003 at 9:00 am, in Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel; interment will follow with full military honors at Topeka Cemetery.
