Calvin Mauzey

Calvin A. "Cal" Mauzey, 82, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at a local hospital.

Calvin was born in Cummings, Ks. on April 8, 1926, the son of Alfred Cecil and Mabel June (Tanner) Mauzey.

He graduated from Effingham High School in 1943.

Calvin served in the US Navy as a Signalman on an LSM ship, during WWII. After completing his military duty he attended the Universal Trades School in Omaha, Ne. for refrigeration and air conditioning.

In 1947, Calvin met Florence E. Hicks at a Cummings, Ks. school program. They were married in Geneseo, Ks. on August 16, 1947. She preceded him in death on April 30, 2007.

Calvin began his career with the Topeka Fire Department in 1954 and worked his way through the ranks, becoming a Battalion Chief. During this time he also worked as an EMT. He retired from the Topeka Fire Department in 1986. In 1973, Calvin, along with fellow firemen were commended by the Mayor and the City of Topeka for saving the lives of three children.

In the early 1950s, he worked for Ed Marlings, putting up some of the first TV antennas in Topeka.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Some of the other hobbies he enjoyed were bowling, woodworking and keeping a history of his boyhood home, Cummings.

Calvin is survived by one daughter, Linda and her husband, Bill Murray, Oskaloosa, Ks; granddaughters, Wendi and husband, Tod Bevitt, Overbrook, Ks. and Kristi and husband, Corey Cook, Topeka; great grandchildren, Liam and Laura Bevitt, Overbrook and Kylie, Xander and Baby Cook, Topeka. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Iva Bowers, Van Alstyne, Tx. and nieces and nephews.

Calvin was cremated. Private inurnment will be at the Cummings Cemetery, Cummings, Ks. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Cummings United Methodist Church, 13919 Front Street, Cummings, Ks. 66016.
