Burnett W. "Barney" Garland, Sr., 77, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born September 6, 1935 in Paris, TX, the son of Willie and Martha Posey Garland.
Barney grew up and graduated high school in Paris where he was a member of Sidney United Methodist Church. He had resided in Topeka since 1956. He was employed by Adams Business Forms for 29 years and later owned and operated Garland's Janitorial Service before retiring in 2008.
Barney married Kathryn Wright on October 6, 1972 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Burnett W. (Robin) Garland, Jr. of Lakeland, FL, Tamara (Harry) Garland-Ezell of Topeka, Arthur (Dana) Garland of Topeka, Melba Garland of San Francisco, CA, Carla (Curtis) Moore of Mt. Vernon, NY, Pamela Shears of Topeka, Michelle Glenn of Lincoln, NE, A. Scott Wright of Omaha, NE, Stacey (Angela) Wright of Kansas City, MO, 16 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren his sisters, Obie Goff of Los Angeles, CA, Delores Parks of Dallas, TX and Ruth Ann Dewson of San Francisco, CA and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Barney was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at El Shaddai Community Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
