Billy Dean "Bill" Horn, 87, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Midland Hospice House.
Bill was born May 2, 1930, in Oswego, KS, to James Theodore "Ted" and Anna Alice (Edmiston) Horn. He graduated from Oswego High School and proudly served two years in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Bill married Leona "June" Strickland on August 18, 1951 in Picher, OK. Together, they moved to Pittsburg, KS where he completed his undergraduate studies at Pittsburg State. He continued his education at the University of Kansas earning his masters and doctorate degrees in education.
He began his teaching career in a one room school house in southeast Kansas and was an elementary school principal for 40 years at Rice, Central Park, Sumner, Highland Park North, McClure, and as an interim principal at Shaner and Highland Park Central during his retirement.
Bill was an active member in KIWANIS, Lion's Club, TARSP and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was an AARP tax preparer and was a world traveler serving as a tour guide with Bryan World Tours, traveling to five continents.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing, boating, camping, hunting, dancing, and taking motorcycle trips. Above all, he enjoyed time spent with friends and family.
He is survived by four children, Connie (Bryce) Brunton, Cindy (Paul Sodamann) Horn, Stuart Horn, and Greg (Melissa) Horn; five grandchildren, Jared (Wendy) Brunton, Jessica (John) Barry, Tyler (Ema) Horn, Shawna (James Newman, Sr.) Horn, and Trevor Horn; and two great-grandchildren and one on the way, James Newman, Jr. and Alexandria Barry.
Billy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Leona "June" Horn; parents; brother, Donald "Jerry" Horn; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Horn; and nephew, Don Horn.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1880 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS 66604. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604.
A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Oswego City Cemetery, Oswego, KS.
