Billie P. Spohn, 79, of Topeka, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Midland Hospice House. She was born on March 31, 1929 in Joplin, Missouri, the daughter of Fred and Vera Powell.
Billie attended Gage Elementary and Boswell Junior High. Because of her academic success, she was allowed to skip two grades and graduated from Topeka High School at age 16. She attended Gulf Park College in Gulf Port, Mississippi for one year before transferring to the University of Kansas where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and earned a degree in psychology.
Billie enjoyed a long and varied career. After many years of full-time motherhood and homemaking, she became a substitute teacher while earning bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Washburn University. She then taught severely emotionally disturbed youth for several years at USD 501 Topeka's Capital City High School. She also spent time working in human resources; as personnel director for Macy's when it first opened in Topeka, and later as a personnel specialist for the Kansas Department of Administration. Billie's final career was as a Certified Financial Planner focusing mainly on assisting teachers with planning for retirement.
Billie married Wayne Hadley in 1949 and they divorced in 1964. She married Dr. Herbert Spohn on July 28, 1973 and they were married for over 35 years. Billie loved to travel. She and Herb visited each of the 50 states and took many trips abroad. Billie was always ready to go on another cruise to any place warm.
She was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her intelligence, independent spirit, concern for others and sense of humor. Survivors include her husband, Herbert Spohn; a daughter, Jodi Mackey and her husband, David, of Topeka; a son, Steve Hadley of Austin, Texas; a granddaughter, Jessica Mackey Samuels of Topeka; and her beloved Yorkie, Angel.
Private graveside services will be on Friday, November 14. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House, 220 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
