Bill Z Scanland, 70, Topeka, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Midland Hospice House.

Bill was born March 22, 1944 in Holton, the son of Perry M. and Dorothy E. (Moore) Scanland. He graduated from Butler High School in Huntsville, AL and attended both Kansas State and Washburn University.

Bill served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1965-1968. Later he was a manager for Shakey's Pizza Parlor before becoming a Mason Tender and member of Local #142/1290 in Topeka for 40 years.

Bill was a passionate fan of the Chiefs, Royals and particularly K-State, where he held football season tickets for 40 years. For recreation, he played softball and basketball. He also enjoyed reading about history and would frequently challenge himself with crossword puzzles and cryptiquotes.

Bill married Deborah Montgomery on March 11, 1966 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include son, Bartley Scanland, Topeka; daughters, Adina Scanland, Chelsey Scanland, and grandsons, Ronin and Cosmo Clock, all of Lawrence; and brothers, Michael Scanland, Topeka and Brian Scanland, Decatur, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Tobias and Patrick Scanland.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka, 4775 SW 21st, Topeka. Informal reception to follow. Private family inurnment will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
