Betty M. Swan, 87, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday Feb. 7, 2006 at McCrite Plaza.
She was born September 18, 1918 in McLouth, the daughter of Dr. William L. and Nellie Lowry Borst.
She was raised in North Topeka and graduated from Topeka High School. In her early years, she was an active member of the North Topeka Baptist Church where she played the organ for many years. She was also an accomplished pianist and violinist. She was active with her husband in the Arab Shrine for many years and volunteered with the Girl Scouts.
Mrs. Swan and her husband owned and operated Scotch Cleaners for 20 years and Swan's Formal Wear for over 35 years. She was a longtime resident of the Potwin area until recently.
She married Archie C. Swan on October 1, 1937 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on July 27, 2002.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine F. Bram and her husband Steven of Keller, TX; a son, John B. Swan and his wife Sharon of Topeka; three granddaughters, Melinda K. Mann and her husband Bob, Melissa A. Pitney and her husband Stuart, all of Topeka, and April C. Sones and her husband Brad of Watauga, TX; two grandsons, W. Mirl Swan of Platt City, MO and William Bram of Topeka and 5 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Swan will lie in state after 2:00 pm, Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 pm that evening. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, Feb.10 at the funeral home with burial to follow in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
