Betty Elvira (Hedlund) Quarnstrom, 94, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 4, 2022 at Midland Hospice. She was born near McPherson, Kansas, November 13, 1927, daughter of Inez Elvira (Johnson) and Victor Waldemar Hedlund.
After attending a one room school house as a girl, (New Gottland Country School), rural McPherson, she graduated from McPherson High School in 1945 and attended Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts, Music Degree.
Beginning at an early age, singing and music were a great part of her life. She served as a soloist for many events and occasions.
While attending Bethany College, she met Carl W. Quarnstrom and they were married on December 29, 1951 in the New Gottland Lutheran Church, rural McPherson. They were married nearly 69 years when he died, November 26, 2020.
Mrs. Quarnstrom was a legal secretary in Ithaca, New York for four years while Carl served in the United States Air Force near there. She was a secretary for Howard, Needles, Tammen and Bergendoff, an engineering firm in Topeka, during the construction of the Kansas Turnpike. She was an administrative assistant with the Kansas Senate for 23 years during each legislative session.
She was Past President of the Topeka Bar Auxiliary, Minerva Club, and Music Study Club. She was D.F. of the Topeka P.E.O. Chapter and a member of the Topeka Symphony League as well as Sigma Alpha Iota, an International Music Fraternity. Mrs. Quarnstrom served on the organizational boards of the Topeka Festival Singers and the Topeka Community Concerts. She was a soloist with the Topeka Symphony Chorus and Orchestra. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a choir member and soloist since 1957.
Mrs. Quarnstrom enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining family, neighbors and friends in her home.
Survivors include her sons David (Roxann) Quarnstrom of Shawnee, KS and Douglas (Helen) Quarnstrom of Prairie Village, KS; four grandchildren, Eric (Katherine), Chase, Mary and Joel Quarnstrom; and great-grandson, Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; brothers, V. Arnold, Leonard, Carl and Virgil Hedlund; and three sisters Vivian Osborn, Virginia Mitchell and Alice Burkholder. She felt it was a joy and privilege to grow up in a large family, one of eight siblings.
A celebration of life service for Carl & Betty will be held at 2pm Friday, July 15, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 725 SW Buchanan St, Topeka. Inurnment will be 1pm Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Fairlawn Burial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS.
