Betty Patzkowsky

Betty Jane Patzkowsky, age 88, Topeka, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Midland Hospice House.

She was born January 10, 1921 in Solomon, KS to Ralph and Eva (Diehl) Ramsey. With her family, she moved to Mankato, KS, when she was 6 years old. She attended Mankato grade school and high school. She then moved with her family to Ottawa, KS, and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1938. She attended Ottawa University for two years.

During World War II, Betty worked at Fort Leavenworth in medical supplies and then moved to Winter General Hospital in Topeka. There she met and married Pat (M.E.) Patzkowsky on April 20, 1944 in Topeka, Kansas. In 1965, she went to work for Cotton-O'Neil Medical Office as the receptionist. At that time there were the two doctors and the business office consisted of Betty and one other person. When she retired in 1985, the business had grown to forty doctors and Betty was Business Office Supervisor.

In later years, Betty and Pat took many trips together with friends throughout the US. Her favorite was a cruise to the Caribbean. After Pat passed away, Betty continued to travel. She enjoyed auditing a number of classes at Washburn University, volunteering for the library, hospice, First Methodist Church and especially, Stormont Vail. Betty loved to read and she gave that gift to all her four children. The only thing Betty loved more than reading was to spend time laughing and talking with her family and friends. Betty moved to McCrites Retirement Center in 2001, where she enjoyed the many friends she met there, especially her fellow cardplayers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pat, who died on July 29, 1986. She is survived by a brother, Robert Ramsey of St. Louis Park, MN, three daughters, Carol Patzkowsky of Klamath Falls, OR, Nancy Edwards of Topeka, Mary Reilly of Temple, TX, one son, Mark Patzkowsky of State College, PA, and 8 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
