Betty Jo Smith, 87, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Betty was born February 17, 1927, in Hamilton, Kansas, daughter of Emery and Rudy Mae Easter.

She was united in marriage to Dean W. Smith on May 15, 1946. He preceded her in death.

Betty worked for the State of Kansas as a switchboard operator and then later in human resources.

She loved being with family and hearing about the comings and goings in their lives. Betty also loved cooking, her dogs, puttering in her warm and cozy house, traveling, her computer, her husband Dean, trash TV and the news of the day.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jan Powell, Topeka, and Sandy (Dean) Vivian, Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Becky (Gregg) Bahr, Topeka, and Dawn (James) Turner, Topeka; great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Joshua Bahr, Myles Zabala, and Rodnel Turner, Topeka; and sister-in-law, Maxine Eales, Wichita.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Topeka Free Methodist Church, 3450 SE Indiana Avenue, Topeka. Graveside services will be held at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Topeka Free Methodist Church.
