Betty DeShazo Hanson passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006. She was born to Howard and Arta DeShazo on April 17, 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended school in Beloit, Kansas, where she graduated from high school in 1938. Her career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company began in Beloit and she served as Chief Operator in Norton and Colby before retiring in 1980.
Betty was active in a number of organizations including the Business and Professional Women's Association where she served as President for both the Norton and Colby chapters. She is a past president of the Topeka Newcomers Association, was active in the Telephone Pioneers, and especially active in her church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, where she served in numerous capacities over the years.
Betty married Keith Hanson in Norton, Kansas on March 24, 1952. He passed away on December 3, 1981. Betty and Keith had one child, Gary Hanson of Topeka. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Hanson; two grandchildren, Holly Hanson of Kansas City, MO and Andy Hanson (and his wife Ashley), Salina, KS; two great grandchildren, Drew Hanson and Austin Hanson, Salina; and her sister, Margaret Emmot, Beloit. She is preceded in death by her husband Keith, her parents, and her brother Howard DeShazo of Prairie Village, KS.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Private inurnment will be in Colby, Kansas at a later date.
