Bettie L. (Meggison) Emery passed away November 6, 2014 at the Midland Hospice House. She was born in Topeka on September 13, 1924 and married her high school sweetheart, Ben F. Emery Jr., on September 9, 1944. They had been married 67 years at the time of his death in 2011.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Emery of Norman, Oklahoma, and Ron Emery of Topeka; daughter, Janelle (Emery) Barnes of Tecumseh; sisters, Annabelle Griffin, Lila Hazlet and Frances Allen of Topeka; brother, Robert Meggison of Overbrook; grandchildren, Shawn Emery and Angel Emery of Topeka, Elizabeth (Emery) Stacey and Rebecca (Emery) Foreman of Norman, Oklahoma, and Joshua Barnes of Holton; fifteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Meggison and Dorothy (McMillin) Meggison, a son Robert Emery and a granddaughter Tracy (Emery) Henshaw.
Bettie graduated from Highland Park High School in 1944 and was employed by Sears Roebuck Company as a cashier prior to her retirement. Her hobbies included gardening, fishing, square dancing, recreational vehicle travel in the U.S., watching the Kansas City Royals on TV and at the ballpark and cooking. Her chocolate brownies won "Sears Best Cookies Award" at the company's 88th anniversary celebration in 1974. She regularly sent packages of her cookies and specialty cakes to family members who lived out of state, even as far away as Japan. Bettie was a long-term member of East Side Baptist Church where she assisted in the nursery and with vacation bible school.
Friends may visit with the family and offer their condolences from 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 11 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 10th and Lane.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 12 at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th & Gage.
