Bessie May Garretson, 77, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Stormont-Vail hospital. She was born May 28, 1934 in Parsons, the daughter of Horace and Bessie Mae McMillan Carnahan.
Bessie was a homemaker. She was a member of the Philip-Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed plants, wildlife and especially her dogs and all children.
Bessie married Elmer E. Garretson on March 4, 1952 in Huntsville, AR. He survives. Other survivors include their children, Jeanice A. (Jim) Olinde of Topeka, Vicki S. Garretson of Topeka, four grandchildren, Melissa, Emily, Jeanette and Carrie, five step-grandsons, fourteen great-grandchildren, two siblings, John Carnahan and Betty Schmid, both of Parsons and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Francis, Wayne, Harold, James and Carl.
Cremation has taken place and as per Bessie's wishes, no memorial services are planned. Private inurnment will take place in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd., Topeka, KS 66617. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
