He joined KDOT in 1974 as a Civil Engineer and worked his way up to be the Chief of the Bureau of Design. Bert formed many fond friendships while at KDOT, which he continued long after his retirement in 1992.

In their retirement years they enjoyed multiple vacation cruises where they made many great friends. Bert also got out on the golf course as much as he could to enjoy the outdoors and the nineteenth hole. They were blessed with two children; Christopher Stratmann and Traci Bortz, both of Topeka. Bert greatly enjoyed his time with his son-in-law, Chris Bortz and his daughter-in-law, Dawn Stratmann.
