Bertha M. "Scottie" Johnson

April 12, 1918 — December 29, 2017

Bertha M. (Scottie) Johnson, 99, passed away on December 29 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka. She was born April 12, 1918 in Starkville, CO, the daughter of Claude R. and Alice (Fouret) Scott. The family moved to Topeka in 1928. She attended school at Randolph grade school, Boswell Jr. High and graduated from Topeka High School in 1936. She graduated with a B.S. Degree in Business from the University of Kansas in 1940. She married Arnold W. Johnson on October 9th, 1940 in Topeka. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in October 2010. He passed away August 28th, 2011. She operated the Arnold W. Johnson Insurance Agency, part of the C.R. Scott Mortgage Co., while her husband served in WWII.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, American Association of University Women, Chapter AJ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Beta Sigma Phi, Potpourri Study Group, Stormont-Vail Hospital Auxiliary, the Audubon Society, National Button Society, Kansas Button Society, Missouri Button Society, Heart of America Button Club, various other state button societies, University of Kansas Alumni Association, Shawnee Country Club Women's Golf Association, Cosmopolitan Club (where she served as the first president of Cosmo-Pals), Topeka Knife and Fork Club, Phi Chi Theta Business Sorority at KU, and numerous bridge clubs. She was featured in the Food Fare section in the Topeka Capital Journal for her many recipes. She and Arnold also enjoyed traveling worldwide.

Survivors include her daughter Jill (Raney) Gilliland, of Topeka; a grandson Asher Johnson Gilliland of Topeka; a sister Claudine Scott Lingelbach of Lawrence, KS; a niece Cynthia Bach of Denver CO; and a nephew Randy Lingelbach of San Antonio, TX. She leaves behind wonderful memories and is loved by her family so much.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Services will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education or to the Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University c/o the funeral home, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604.
