Lydia "Bernice" Carlin, 92, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
She was born March 11, 1922, in Hoyt, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Lydia Caroline (Damme) Carlin. She was a graduate of Hoyt High School.
Bernice was employed by Forbes Air Force Base for 32 years, retiring in 1975. She was the first female civilian employed by the base and the last female employee to leave at the closing of the base.
Bernice was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church and most recently a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She bowled in various bowling leagues at Gage Bowl.
Survivors include two nieces, Judith Ann (Gary) Bush, Edmond, OK and Nancy Landis, Bixby, OK; two nephews, Stephen C. (Leslie) Sherman, Stockton, CA and Dr. James W. Carlin, Long Beach, CA; great nieces and nephews, Kristin (Jason) Sherman Vines, San Francisco and their children, Nathan, Jacob and Zachary, Kyle Sherman, San Diego, CA, Captain Christopher (Tina) Landis, Virginia Beach, VA and their children, Monica, Anna and Julia, Michael (Dawn) Landis, Bixby, OK, Caroline (James) Nichols, Bixby, OK and their children, James IV and Carissa, Debbie Keele, Norman, OK and her children, Adam Halverson, Isadora Wyant and Julia Keele, Cathie (Eddie) Filian, Glendale, CA and their children, Sophia and Delilah, Michael Bush, Norman, OK and child, Avari and Erin (Nick) Bush-Berich, Pasadena, CA and their child, Tucker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Leona Sherman, a brother, Roy Carlin, a brother-in-law, Nathan Sherman and a sister-in-law, Virginia Carlin.
Bernice enjoyed bowling, oil painting, traveling, spending time with her family and friends and beloved cats.
The family and friends are invited to meet at 10 a.m., Monday, September 22, 2014, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, to go in procession for a graveside service at the Hoyt Cemetery, Hoyt, KS. Bernice will lie in state after 3 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
