Bernice Avery, 94, of Topeka, passed away March 9, 2013, at Brewster Place. She was born August 28, 1918, in Concordia, KS, the daughter of George and Edith Dollie Pearce Clark. She married the late Arthur Harold Avery. He preceded her in death on April 17, 2012. Bernice started teaching in a one room school house, then went on to get a Master's in Education from Washburn University, before teaching at Sumner and Randolph Elementary Schools in Topeka for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Dollie Clark; husband, Arthur; brothers, Thaine (Lucille) and Ivan (Jerry) Clark; sister, Marilyn (Bob) Hofflinger; brother in law, Lowell Swenson. Survivors include sister, Carolyn Swenson; nine nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Brewster Place Chapel (main building), 1205 SW 29th Street, Topeka, at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka, is handling arrangements. To leave a memory of Bernice, please visit the guestbook below.
