Bernese M. Ward, 83, of Topeka passed away September 26, 2002 in a local hospital. She was born in Trego County, Kansas on April 1, 1919 to George M. and Maude V. Kackley Maddy.
Mrs. Ward graduated from Great Bend High School in 1937. She then attended Colorado Woman's College from 1937-1939. Mrs. Ward was an active member of First Congregational Church, where she had been President of the Women's Club, vocal and bell choir member. Mrs. Ward was a volunteer and board member with the Topeka YWCA. She also volunteered with Battered Woman's Task Force and TARC. She held membership in both Prime Timers and The Woman's Club.
On July 3, 1941 she married Lewis M. Ward in Newark, NJ, he passed away November 18, 1996.

Mrs. Ward will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town from Noon to 9pm on Sunday, the family will receive friends from 2-4pm. Memorial services will be held Monday, September 30, 2002 at 10:30 am at First Congregational Church. Burial will be private.
