Bernard Miles, 68, a life long resident of Topeka, Kansas died Thursday, June 12, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born July 16, 1934. Parents: Dr. John W. H. and Anna K. Miles Birdwell.
He graduated from Topeka High School in 1952. He served as a Sgt.1st Class, HQ Btry, 35th Inf. Div. Arty, National Guard of Kansas Reserve Army and was honorable discharged in 1960.
He was employed by Seymour Foods, Henry manufacturing, Allis Chalmers, and Deutz-Allis as a design engineer and retired in 1987. He was a man of strong faith. He loved caring for his yard and plants. He was a skilled woodworker who enjoyed making cabinets, bookcases, and chests, and helping with home improvements, especially for his family. In case of emergency, he was always ready with the plunger and a hammer.
He was married to Ann Miller on November 26, 1952 at Topeka. The celebrated their golden anniversary in 2002.
Mr. Miles was preceded in death by a son, William Ward Stuart Miles in 1962. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory P. Miles and Betty, Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy A. Cathey and Don, Topeka, KS; a son, Vincent A. Miles, Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah A. Greiner and Ken, Columbus, NE; grandchildren: Joshua Cathey, Michael Greiner, Michelle Cathey, Mary Miles, Douglas Cathey, paul Miles, Matthew Greiner, and Mitchell Greiner; his father, Dr. John W. H. Bridwell, Topeka; and a brother, John D. Bridwell, Boulder, CO.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2003 at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Miles will lie in state after 1 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Penwell Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Capper's Foundation, 3500 SW 10th Ave. Topeka, KS 66604
