Bernard "Bernie" Devoy passed away at home on December 31, 2022 at the age of 78.
Bernie was born in December of 1944 to Nellie and Wayne of Jacksonville Illinois. From an early age Bernie was an avid fisherman and hunter and spent the majority of his life enjoying these activities. He could also be seen spending time with his or his daughter's dogs. He enjoyed history, reading, and watching his favorite movie, Dances with Wolves. He liked to travel to numerous local fishing holes, Roaring River State Park and the Colorado Rockies with his wife to name a few. However, nothing compared to a meal his wife had prepared for him.
In June of 1968 he married Linda after meeting at Pittsburg State. Bernie leaves behind his wife of 54 years, along with their daughter Jenni Harrison and son-in-law Andy, Bernie's three grandchildren Max, Sam and Phoebe. Bernie is also survived by his sisters, Rita and Linda as well as special nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great great niece and great great nephew.
Bernie was active in the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War from March 1970 to March 1971 as 1st Lieutenant with the Combat Corp of Engineers. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Bronze Star Medal. In 1972 he ended his Armed Forces career as a First Year Captain through Fort Riley.
Bernie earned his bachelor's degree in 1969 from Pitt State in Social Science, his Master's in Social Work in 1976 at the University of Kansas and in 1981 he received his Specialist Clinical License in Social Work. After 32 years of service, Bernie retired from the State of Kansas in 2006.
