Belva L. Sandmeyer, 88, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011, at her home in Topeka.
She was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Lenora, Kan., the daughter of James B. and Beatrice Swendener Butler. She was the great granddaughter of David Butler, the first governor of Nebraska.
Mrs. Sandmeyer was a 1940 graduate of Topeka High School. After graduating from business college, she did office work in Topeka and helped with the war effort by working for the Defense Department in Wichita and Topeka.
She was a secretary in the Kansas Legislature for more than 20 sessions. She also worked in several other state agencies before retiring in 1988.
She was active in the leadership at Potwin Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for 57 years, and was a room mother at Potwin Elementary School. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Block Mother and a volunteer for the American Heart Association and other organizations. After she retired, she volunteered as an election judge for Shawnee County.
She married John J. Sandmeyer on Sept. 7, 1949, in Topeka. Together they lived in Carbondale, Pa.; Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Parsons, Kan., before returning to Topeka in 1954.
She is survived by two daughters, Sue Sandmeyer, Arlington, Va.; and Lisa Sandmeyer, Topeka; a son, Cary Sandmeyer, Topeka; five granddaughters, Theresa (Brian) Miller, Topeka; Emily Dozier, Arlington; Jessica Sandmeyer, Topeka; Amanda Sandmeyer, Topeka; and Brianna Sandmeyer, Kansas City, Kan.; five great-grandchildren, Reegan and Aubrey Miller, Topeka; James Neis, Topeka; and Evianna and Audrina Acosta, Kansas City Kan.; and a sister, Bette Jackson, Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years and her son John J. Sandmeyer Jr.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date in Topeka Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, SW 10th and Lane.
