Belmont Stuart Evans Iii

April 2, 1942 — April 24, 2018

Belmont S. Evans III, 76, Topeka, KS passed away at the Topeka VA Center for Community Living after a long battle with Parkinsonism on April 24, 2018.

He was born April 2, 1942 in Virginia Beach, Virginia to Belmont S. Jr. and Mary Meyers Evans who preceded him in death. As the son of an Army officer, his homes included many states throughout the US. He graduated high school at the Hawthorne School in Bethesda, MD. Belmont joined the military in 1964 and served through 1984. He served several deployments in Southeast Asia and Korea and fought in the Vietnam War.

Belmont's greatest treasures were his family. His son Andrew born in 1970 and Daniel in 1981. He helped care for his mother at the end of her days and then moved to Topeka, Kansas to be with his son Andrew and family. He enjoyed being a grandfather to his two grandsons and took pride in their academic and musical skills. He was active and enjoyed watching them play sports and travelling with his son before he became ill.

Belmont took up marathon running in his 40s and completed the grueling Mule Mountain Marathon. He was also active in the National Veteran Golden Age games in his 60s where he competed in table tennis and swimming. In 2009 he was diagnosed with Parkinsonism, which eventually took his ability to be an active grandparent away. Belmont was so happy and proud of their accomplishments and loved when the boys held family concerts at the Topeka VA Center for Community Living.

Belmont is survived by his son Andrew Evans, ex-daughter-in-law Sher Baber, grandsons Forrest (Kara) and Walter Evans. He has two sisters Meg Evans and Cecile B. Evans and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son Daniel B. Evans, parents Belmont and Mary Evans, and sister Genevieve Evans.

Memorial services will be held at 4pm on Thursday, May 3 at the chapel of the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center (Building 23, 2200 Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS 66622).

Burial services will be held 11am on Wednesday, May 9 at Leavenworth National Cemetery with full military honors.
