Arthur "Art" Hanni, 90, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at Rossville Health Care. He was born December 15, 1918, in Corning, Kansas the son of Rudolph J. and Emma (Blauer) Hanni.
He grew up on a farm outside of Corning and attended Washburn College where he played football from 1937 to 1940, was the captain of the football team, Homecoming King, Class Officer in 1940, and graduated with a degree in Business and Economics.
Upon leaving Washburn he went to work for the investment firm of Estes, Snyder & Company. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp immediately following Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He flew 70 bombing missions in the European Theater of WWII, as a Group Bombardier-Navigator on B-26s, 454th Bomb Squadron, 323rd Bomb Group, 9th Air Force, and was decorated with a Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross with several oak leaf clusters. He returned to San Angelo, Texas with the rank of captain and trained other flying crews.
Art married his college sweetheart, Clarice A. Cox, on September 14, 1944. They returned to Topeka where he began an investment banking career that spanned 60 years with Seltsam-Hanni Co., Inc. He was instrumental in the development of the West Hills subdivision. He served on the board of the National Association of Security Dealers, was a life member of the Central Congregational Church, a member of the Elks Lodge, Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop #175 of Topeka and an avid outdoorsman and gardener.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice, of 48 years, and his long time companion Isabel Gangel; his brother, Vonn, and two sisters, L. Marie Anderson and Beulah J. Brown. Survivors include his son James (Nancy) Hanni; daughter, Jane Hanni of Topeka and one grandson, Brian Hanni of Lawrence.
Funeral Service will at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2009, at Central Congregational Church, 1248 SW Buchanan St. Topeka, KS 66604. Luncheon will follow at the church. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Arthur will lie in state from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the donor's choice.
