Arthur C. Cherry, Jr., MD son of Dorothy S. and Arthur C. Cherry Sr. was born on August 8, 1927 in New York, NY and died November 22, 2008 in Topeka, KS. Art grew up in Cincinnati, OH and married Nancy Gemmill in 1951 in Abilene, KS. He graduated from Yale University in 1949 and received a medical degree from Case Western Reserve in 1953.
From 1954 to 1956 he served in the United States Air Force Medical Corps as a Captain and was stationed in the Philippines. In 1958 he completed a pediatric residency at the University of Kansas then began his pediatric practice with the Topeka Medical Center retiring in 1994 from Pediatric Associates.
Art remained very busy with professional and civic affiliations taking on numerous leadership roles. Among the most prominent professional associations were many committee chairmanships at StormontVail Regional Medical Center,the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatrics in Review editorial staff, the American Medical Association Joint Review on Educational Programs for the Physician Assistant, the National Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, the Kansas Medical Society, and the Kansas Child Abuse Prevention Council. He also enjoyed his involvement with several community organizations and clubs like the Twenty-Thirty Club, Rotary Club of Topeka, Topeka Chamber of Commerce, Topeka Jazz Workshop and Topeka Friends of the Zoo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy and son, Doug both of Topeka and his brother, Doug of Cincinnati, OH. Survivors include his son Robert (Chad) and his wife Julie who live in Spokane and their two children, Michael and Katie, and Doug's two sons, Doug and Jeremy, and one great-granddaughter.
There will be a memorial service at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4746 SW 21st, Topeka, KS, Monday, December 1st at 10:00 am. Inurnment will be held privately.
