Arlene Opal (Crable) Smith, 86, of Delray Beach, FL, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017, in DeLand, FL.
Arlene was born March 29, 1931, in Michigan Valley, KS, to Charles William and Sarah Jane (Ogle) Crable. She graduated from Michigan Valley High School in 1949. Arlene married Louis G. Smith, Jr. on February 14, 1952, in Topeka. As a young woman she sang in a female gospel group. Ocean cruises and traveling throughout the United States proved to be some of her favorite things to do, along with spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She retired from the Palm Beach Post Newspaper in 2002 after 22 years of service.
She is survived by her three children, Louis G. Smith III and his wife Lori, of Durham, NC; Tina G. Ballentine and her husband Jim, of Delray Beach, FL; and Richard C. Smith and his wife Michele, of Tecumseh, KS; five grandchildren, Courtney Kline, Chelsea Austin, Louis G. Smith IV, Jami Mullins, and Hanna Smith; and four great grandchildren, Alexa, Isabella, Lucas, and Caroline.
Arlene was preceded in death by her husband.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604. The family will greet family and friends an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka, KS.
