Arlene E. Baker, 88, Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at a local care center.
Arlene was born March 7, 1918 in Topeka, the daughter of Howard and Vera Marie (Allison) Williams. She attended schools in Berryton and graduated from Berryton High School in 1936 where she was valedictorian of her class.
She worked for the State of Kansas, Architectural division for several years, where she met her husband, Burl Baker. They were married on February 14, 1953 at which time she became a full time wife and homemaker.
She and her husband were instrumental in starting Highland Crest Baptist Church and Grace Community Church. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School. They enjoyed scenic driving vacations, especially those involving lighthouses and covered bridges.
Her husband preceded her in death on May 10, 2003. Survivors include daughters, Sharon Boyer, Becky Harrop and Pamela Hoefer, all of Topeka; son, Gary Woodman, Wichita; 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at Grace Community Church. Burial will be in Topeka Cemetery. Arlene will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Friday and visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
