Ardyce M. Prater

November 11, 1937 — February 20, 2020

Ardyce M. Prater, 82, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020.

She was born November 11, 1937, in Frankfort, Kansas, the daughter of Ben and Cressie (Stewart) Emmot. She graduated from Topeka High School.

She unselfishly served others from the time she was a little girl till the age of 77 years old. At a very young age she helped her mom serve farm hands including her four brothers and father. As a mother and wife, she served her country as an Air Force wife during the Cold War, raising 4 kids during our father's service. She was left with why or where our father went on his mssions, without explanation or knowing when or if he would return. She served honorably and lovingly, keeping the home fires burning. In the 60s and early 70s while raising five children, she oversaw and organized bridal receptions among other volunteer work for the First Methodist Church at 6th and Harrison where she was a member for many years. As she grew older, one of her gifts was nursing and comforting people as they lived their final days and took their last breath. She was always willing to give her time to others, never leaving much time for herself.

The holidays were one of her favorite times of the year where she made memories for her family that will last a lifetime.

Ardyce married Robert E. Prater on July 26, 1958 in Topeka, KS; he preceded her on death on April 28, 2010. Survivors include a son, Robert Prater, son, James (Sherri) Prater, daughter, Roslyn (Bryce) McHenry, and son, Ben (Chanda) Prater; grandchildren, Ryan Prater, Sean McHenry, Holli Epperly, Amber Prater, Megan Prater, and Nicholas Prater and two great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Elisha Reavis and brothers, L D "Barney" Emmot, Loren Emmot, Warren "Bud" Emmot, and Homer L Emmot.
