Annette Douglass

February 21, 1935 — June 21, 2021

Peggie Annette (Gailey) Douglass, 86, of Topeka, passed suddenly after a brief illness on Monday, June 21, 2021.

She was born February 21, 1935, in Waycross, Georgia, the daughter of James and Johno (Allen) Gailey. She graduated from Fairview High School in Dayton, Ohio.

Annette met the love of her life, David Alan Douglass while working at Gem City Savings and Loan in Dayton, Ohio. They were united in marriage on February 1, 1958 in Dayton. David's career took the newlyweds to Washington, DC for a short period of time while he worked at the U.S. Capital. They eventually settled in Topeka, Kansas and raised two children, Jami and Gary. She was a homemaker and enjoyed raising her children; attending every sporting event for them. They enjoyed many family vacations together throughout the United States. Early in their marriage, David and Annette enjoyed taking rides in their Convertible Porsche and 1965 Mustang. They enjoyed listening to jazz music every evening together. She loved to send hand written notes and cards to her family and friends for anniversaries, birthdays, and special events. She sent special Christmas cards each year to over 200 people and would stay connected with her friends and family online. Annette talked on the phone daily with her good friend, Shirley Huffman. She frequently reminisced about her trip to Estes Park with her beloved friend, Norma and watched the park cameras on a regular basis to see the snow fall over the mountains.

She loved spending time in her back yard watching the wildlife that would come and visit her. Her favorite hobby was bird watching, especially humming birds. She also enjoyed planting flowers and caring for her garden. In her spare time, she enjoyed crafting, especially needle point crafts. She had an egg collection of 100 decorative eggs and silver spoons from around the world.

Annette was an active member with First Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas since 1976. She served as a deacon and a representative on the Nominating Committee throughout various terms. She was a part of many groups within the church including Caring Friends, Adult Sunday Class, Women of the Church, Aging with Grace, Faces on Faith, and many more. She helped with the First Presbyterian Church archives alongside Norma Pettijohn.

The love of her life, David, preceded her in death on March 2, 2014. She is also preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Brian Bailey.

She is survived by her daughter, Jami (Don) Colson; son, Gary Douglass; grandsons, Brandon (Brianne) Bailey, Brandon (Kim) Colson, and Jordon (Taylor) Colson; great grandchildren, Janelle (Mother Jennifer) Bailey, Brooklyn and Brecken Bailey, Hunter and Caydon Colson, and Kendra Damman; and her beloved cat, Snookie.

Honoring Annette's wishes, cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, July 16, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas 66612. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, KS, 66604-3720 or First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison St., Topeka, KS, 66612.
