Anna Mary (Murphy) Lyle of Topeka died August 29, 2015 at The Presbyterian Manor, Topeka, Kansas.
She was born September 15, 1923, at Mercy Hospital in Independence, KS, the fourth child of Ivalee and Paul E. Murphy. Her father was a prominent early-day merchant in Caney, KS. Three brothers deceased: James Wm. (Bill), Paul E. (Bud), and Joe E. Murphy, all natives of Caney, KS. She was the widow of the late internationally-honored news photographer, Harold V. Lyle of Topeka, with whom Anna Mary Murphy had worked as a journalist on the Topeka Daily Capital from 1949 to 1957. She married Mr. Lyle in 1971.
Mrs. Lyle attended Caney schools, graduating in 1941. She interrupted study in journalism at the University of Kansas to work four years during World War II in the Defense Plant Division of Phillip's Petroleum Co. at Bartlesville, OK, to help develop synthetic rubber to replace the natural rubber trees controlled by the Japanese in Southeast Asia.
Mrs. Lyle graduated from KU College of Liberal Arts & Science in 1949. She was named Outstanding Senior Woman in journalism and elected to Phi Beta Kappa, national scholastic honorary fraternity
Mrs. Lyle worked briefly in 1949 on the Manhattan Mercury-Chronicle before joining the editorial staff of the Topeka Daily Capital from fall of 1949 to August of 1957. For the next 26 years she was an editor and director of publications for Kansas-National Education Association until retirement in 1983.
Survivors include stepsons Tim (Jan) Lyle of Topeka and Weston Lyle of Kansas City, Mo; step-grandchildren Shane Lyle, Amy Annis, and Jessica Elizabeth Fendt; and nieces and nephews: Dr. Linda Fuhrer, Larry Murphy, Paul Grant Murphy, Pamyla Sue Munday, Sheryl Ann Gatlin, Nancy Ann Murphy, Mark Bitsko, and Steve Bitsko.
Mrs. Lyle was a long time contributor to The Williams Fund at K.U and a Life Member of the K.U. Chancellors Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, 66614.
She will be buried alongside her late husband in the Murphy lot of Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney, KS. A memorial service will be held 3:00 pm on Friday, September 4, 215 at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor, Jellison Chapel. Interment at Sunnyside Cemetery will be Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
