Andrew A. (Andy) Mikkelsen, 83, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2004.
Mr. Mikkelsen was born January 19, 1921 in Perth Amboy, NJ, the son of Andrew and Winnie Lundevell Mikkelsen.
He was a decorated hero of both World War II and the Korean War. While in the military he met Myrtle Crawford and they were wed at Ft. Carson, CO. on May 18, 1945. She preceeded him in death on February 15, 1997.
Upon discharge from the military they moved to Topeka and he attended Washburn University where he received a Bachelors Degree in Education. He received his Masters Degree from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. Mr. Mikkelsen taught, coached and eventually became an administrator at many schools throughout Kansas. He retired from the education field in 1982.
He was an active member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and eventually served as Commander of his post.
He attended Central Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Mikkelsen and his wife Peggy Stauffer of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Topeka; a daughter Andrea Anton and her husband, Bill of Tulsa, OK.; five grandchildren: Drake Mikkelsen, Neelee and Ericka Williams, Nicole and Jillian Anton, and five great grandchildren, and one sister, Betty Gutowski of Belvidere, NJ.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will be at Penwell-Gabels Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
