Alvin J. Georgia, Sr.

Alvin J. Georgia, Sr., 78, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at his home. He was born on July 13, 1929 in Lawrence, the son of James L. and Letha Posten Georgia. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1947 and attended the University of Kansas. He was an Army Air Corps veteran where he obtained the rank of Sgt. He moved to Topeka in 1950. Alvin was employed as a firefighter for the City of Topeka for many years before retiring as an Assistant Fire Chief. He was also employed by M. Katch & Company. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, Prince Hall Affiliation. He also served as Sovereign Grand Inspector General for the Kansas Council of Deliberation. Alvin married Kathryn A. Newman on July 20, 1952. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Jocelyn Thompson and husband, Alexander of Yorba Linda, CA, Roxanne Irvin and husband, LeRoy of Placentia, CA, Carolyn Georgia of Lake Elsinore, CA, one son, Alvin J. Georgia, Jr., of Tustin, CA, seven grandchildren, Angela, LeRoy, Charles I., Charles T., Janelle, Sarah and Brittany, four great-grandchildren, and one brother, Leonard W. Clark, Jr. and wife, Leatha of Wichita. He was preceded in death by one son, Galen in 1993. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. John A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Alvin will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. The casket will remain closed.
