Alvin Argus Stevens, 87, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2005 at his son's home after a lengthy illness.
He was born November 23, 1917 in Atchison, the son of Cecil and Martha Wegner Stevens.
The family moved to White River, South Dakota and returned to Kansas after a few years to live near Onaga, KS. He attended both country schools and Onaga Elementary School. He was a 1936 graduate of Onaga High School. After graduation, he was employed by the Pottawatomie County Treasurer until he was called to military service in December, 1941. He served at the induction station at Ft. Leavenworth and was later transferred to the 104th Infantry Division Headquarters. He served in the European Theater of Operations and was honorably discharged with the rank of T/Sgt in October of 1945.
He attended Clark's Business School, studying stenograph court reporting. While attending night school, he was employed by K.P.&L, the Federal Dept. of the Interior and the V.A. Hospital. He was certified as a State Court Reporter in 1955 and was employed by the State of Kansas Tax Commission. In 1957 he was appionted Official Court Reporter for the 2nd Judicial District. He served in that capacity until his retirement in1983. Following his retirement, he moved to Topeka.
He married Neva Rockwell on April 24, 1945 in Wichita. She preceded him in death in 1982. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Orville and a sister, Viletta.
Survivors include a son, Terry Stevens and his wife Sue; two grandsons, Brian Stevens, Michael Stevens and his wife Angel; one great grandson, Jacob Stevens and one step great grandson Blake Sample, all of Topeka; one brother, Francis Stevens and his wife Rose of Billings, Montana and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 Fillmore, Topeka, Kansas with inurnment to follow at 3:00 pm in Wamego Cemetery.
