Alta Rosalie Rice

Alta Rosalie. Rice, 92, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Aldersgate Village.

Mrs. Rice was born December 6, 1916 on a farm in Marshall County, near Irving, KS, the daughter of Dwight and Rosy L. (Skalla) Smerchek. She was reared and educated in the area schools, graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1934.

She married Alvin Reed. They divorced. She attended Emporia State Teachers College 1939 – 1940, receiving a three year state teaching certificate. She was employed by Denver Colorado Public School Administration for several years and for ten years was a secretary/bookkeeper for Robert A. Knecht, CPA, Denver, CO, before she retired. She married Leland "Dale" Rice on December 24, 1952 in Topeka, KS. He survives. Mrs. Rice was a member of the Lowman United Methodist Church, Lowman United Methodist Women, a former member of the General Federated Women's Club in Wamego, KS 1998 to 1993, Active in volunteer work at Doorstep Inc., Topeka, KS.

Alta will be remembered by her ready smile, her loving concern for her many relatives and friends, and her many beautiful quilts and afghans for her nieces and nephews. Survivors are her one brother, Eugene Smerchek, Tecumseh, KS, and many cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Rice was cremated. Private inurnment services will be at a later date at the Lincoln Cemetery, Lebo, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 Asbury Dr. Topeka, KS 66614. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel in Topeka is assisting the family.
