Alphus "Al" C. Mounkes, 87 of Tecumseh, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Plaza West Regional Health Center. He was born on May 20, 1921 in Admire, KS to Elisha N. and Hattie Ida (McKinley) Mounkes.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII. He served on the battleship USS Iowa. On April 16, 1946 he married Ilene Zerfas at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis, KS. Mr. Mounkes was a farmer for 7 years, after that he was employed with the Kansas Department of Transportation for 24 years. He later worked for Western Area Supply Center (Postal) for 9 years before retiring. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Topeka. He was a life member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Bukovina Society of the Americas and was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Mr. Mounkes is survived by his wife Ilene of the home; a sister Eunice Nichols of Philadelphia, PA; a brother Eldon W. Mounkes and his wife Donnalee of Lyndon, KS; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 18 at the First Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Osage City Cemetery. Mr. Mounkes will lie in state after 8:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, 1234 SW Fairlawn Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 or The American Heart Association, 5375 SW 7th St, Topeka, KS 66606.
