Almedia Stewart Brown
(Affectionately known as "Bey")
Almedia Brown died November 9th, 2012 at 1:40 pm, at the age of 77, with her family and friends around her bedside. A wake service will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel from 6 pm until 8 pm on Friday, November 16. She was born on May 30th (Memorial Day), 1935 in River Rouge, Michigan.
Her father, Robert Stewart, worked as a foundry man in the Ford Rouge Factory. He later became a construction worker building the Ford Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. He assisted in the building of Detroit Metro Airport. Her mother, Minervia Stewart was a day worker and a home maker. Her mother and father became the first entrepreneurs in the village of Inkster when they opened the first neighborhood restaurant and grocery store, known as Stewart's Little Heaven.
Almedia graduated from River Rouge High School in River Rouge, Michigan. After graduation, she attended the Inhalation Therapy program at Memorial Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Almedia then worked for a number of years at Memorial Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, also known as Santa Fe Hospital. She moved to Lawrence, Kansas and worked at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital until she retired.
Almedia attended Bible College for biblical counseling. She became an active church member at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Almedia became the church mother and evangelist.
Almedia enjoyed traveling, dancing and going to the Moines, gathering with her family and socializing with her church.
She is survived by three daughters, Ramona and Ernest Reed, Veleeta Johnson and Delise and Wilbur Curry, two grandsons, Taro Johnson and Jordon Brooks, two granddaughters, Litrease and Robbie Holley and Misha Reed, two sisters, Mosoline Horton and Ellen Jones, two brothers, Robert Warsaw Stewart and Halie Salassie Stewart, six great grandchildren, Little Robbie and Ariana Holley and Taro, Taylor, Anwyn and Alauria Johnson, and three nieces, Kimberly Walker, Michele Stewart, Rhonda Jones and Marlow Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Minervia Stewart, her husband Harold Brown, her daughter, Georgena Wesley, her son, Mark Wesley, her sisters, Lenore and Flora, and her brother, Alfonso Stewart.
