Alice Van Petten Lyon, 97, Topeka, died Friday, February 23, 2007.
She was born March 28, 1909 in Topeka, the daughter of Alfred Emery Van Petten, Sr. and Winnifred Snoddy Van Petten. She married Fred Forsythe Lyon on November 30, 1929.
A graduate of Topeka High School in 1925, she attended Monticello College for Women for two years, returning to Washburn University to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French in 1929.
After her marriage, Mrs. Lyon taught school in Reading, Kansas before moving to Oklahoma and Texas with her family. After her husband's death in 1947, she worked at the Topeka Council of Churches for several years until returning to teaching. She devoted 20 years to teaching first and second grade at Grant Elementary School, retiring in 1975. Active in the Topeka community, she served as President of Children's Hour of Topeka and held positions of responsibility in Kappa Alpha Theta, NONOSO, Delta Kappa Gamma and First United Methodist Church. She was a long-time volunteer for the Red Cross, the Topeka Public Library and the YWCA. Over the last 60 years her house across the street from the Washburn campus was a second home to over 100 college students who shared her home, hospitality and friendship while they attended Washburn University.
She is survived by three children, Barbara Johnson and her husband David, of Fullerton, CA; Philip Lyon (the late Joanie Lyon) of Livonia, MI, and Carol Vogel and her husband Jim, of Topeka, Kansas. Her family also includes her beloved grandchildren; Laurie Allyn, Lynne Tsuda, Carol van Ahlers, Marilyn Kay Johnson, Barbara Poirier, Deborah Beattie, Jennifer Stadler, Michael Vogel and Matthew Vogel, as well as her twelve great-grandchildren; Clayton Allyn, Carly Tsuda, David Tsuda, John van Ahlers, Michael van Ahlers, Aaron Poirier, Travis Poirier, Robbie Beattie, Kristen Beattie, Julie Beattie, Kayla Stadler and Bryan Stadler,
A memorial service will be held at the Carole Chapel on the Washburn University Campus on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Private graveside services will follow in Burlingame, Kansas.
