Our Mother, Alice Lee Blake passed away on December 9, 2006, at Brewster Place Health Center. She was born on January 10, 1911 at Lecompton to Fred and Cora Lee Moore. After the sudden, early death of her Mother she was adopted by her father's sister, Cora Alice and husband Boyd P. Scott.
She graduated from Topeka High School and Washburn University.
She married Dr. Henry S. Blake, Jr. on August 29, 1935 in a double ring ceremony with her husband's sister Elizabeth Blake and Homer Hiebert.
Alice was a 82 year member of First United Methodist Church and recently received an award for being the longest standing member of the church. She was also active in two bridge clubs; P.E.O. Sisterhood GJ Chapter in which she was a founding member and served twice as President, and Corresponding Secretary, Chaplain, and President of the Cooperative Board; Gourmet Club; Travel & History Club; Home Economics Club; AAUW; Knife & Fork; and Topeka Country Club. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She volunteered at Washburn University International Center to help foreign students learn English as a second language.
She was a tender, loving, caring Mother who would do anything for us that we needed, whether Cub Scouts, spelling help, reciting lines for plays, or helping us prepare for tests. She taught us the importance of etiquette, to always say "please" and "thank you", always respond to invitations, and to write endless "thank you" notes. She was very understanding and compassionate toward others and was known as the "World's Best Worrier". She enjoyed knitting and needlepoint and donated her handwork to the Brewster Bazaar.
Alice Lee was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Henry S. Blake and her sisters, Wilma Morris and Elizabeth Hiebert.
Survivors include 3 children: a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Onis Lemon, a daughter, Sally Bentobji and a son and daughter-in-law, Henry III and Ruth Blake, all of Topeka. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Reenie Henry, Kansas City, MO; Sabria Toussaint, England; Paula Geisler, Lee's Summit, MO; Amine Bentobji, New Orleans, LA; David Lemon, Topeka; Julie Hardin, Thornton, CO; Dr. Kelli Janata, Greeley, CO; Henry Blake IV, Overland Park and Ashley Blake, Topeka.
