Alene Ellsworth Buenning, 93, Topeka, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009 at Homestead Assisted Living.
Alene was born October 6, 1915 in Hill City, KS, the daughter of Edward and Clara (Richardson) Ellsworth. She graduated from Hill City High School and attended Brown-Macke Business School in Salina.
She married Paul Buenning in June, 1936 in Salina. They moved to Oklahoma City, OK and later to Atchison, KS where they owned the radio station, KARE. In 1969 they moved to Weatherford, OK and built radio station, KWEY AM-FM. Her husband passed away in 1981.
Alene moved to Edmond, OK and married Max Griffin. He died in 1999. She later moved to Topeka to be with her daughters.
Alene will always be remembered as a wonderful mother, a woman of real strength and inner beauty. She had a great sense of humor and loved music. She enjoyed dancing, golf, bridge and was an active member of P.E.O.
Survivors include daughters, Lynn A Buenning, Topeka, Jan C Hendrix, Topeka, Gail M Buenning, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Lisa Lynn (Matt) Hommel, Houston, TX, Robert (Joy) Wolfgang, Gardner, KS, Eric (Anna) Edwardson, Beaumont, TX, Traci (Tony) Callandrillo, Kansas City, KS, Darin Tate Hill, Jamie (Kevin) Moran, all of Phoenix, AZ, Jeremy Ryan (Beth) Hill, Sylvania, GA; and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Ellsworth.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Homestead Assisted Living. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2009 at the Roselawn Cemetery in Salina.
The family requests no flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to the YWCA Battered Women's Task Force, 225 SW 12th, Topeka, Kansas 66612.
