ALBERTA ELSIE HINES
Alberta E. Hines, 95, died April 5,2004 at Topeka Midland Hospice House.
She was born January 31, 1909 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of James Harry and Violet Sartain. She graduated from Garfield High School of Terre Haute in 1927. She graduated from Indiana State Teachers College (now called Indiana State University) on June 12, 1931 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Latin and mathematics. She received an Indiana State Teachers License a month later, in July 24, 1931.
She lived, worked, and attended school in Terre Haute, Indiana until she married John William Hines, of Milton, Indiana - also a June, 1931 graduate of Indiana State University - in October, 1931 at Indiana State Teachers Convention time, shortly after her Indiana State University graduation. As her husband was employed by various Indiana public school systems as principal, coach, and teacher and by the U.S. Wage and Hour Division and the National Labor Relations Board as Assistant to the Indianapolis Regional Director, she lived and participated in the church and other community activities of several Indiana communities including Union Mills, Grovertown, Burlington, Columbus, Brookville, and Bedford.
In Bedford, Alberta Hines, as a member of the First Presbyterian Church, became the Worthy Matron of the Bedford chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a part of the Masonic order, and an Adviser to the Bedford chapter of
the Order of the Rainbow Girls. She taught history for the Bedford (Indiana) High School and mathematics for the Bedford Junior High School, from 1944 until 1962, until moving to Indianapolis.
As her husband was promoted to Assistant to the Indianapolis National Labor Relations Board Regional Director and trained and supervised Field Examiners for the southern part of Indiana, she became a member of the First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis. She participated in the church as an Elder; Deacon, and general church volunteer as she taught Mathematics at the Belzer Junior High School of Indianapolis, a part of the Lawrence (Indiana)Township School System, from 1962 until 1967, when she retired.
When her husband, John Wm. Hines died in Florida in 1992, she continued to live alone in Indianapolis for a few years. Then she visited her daughter, Dr. Mary Alice Hines, the Clarence W. King Endowed Chairholder of Finance and
Real Estate, Washburn University School of Business Topeka, for two years before moving permanently to Topeka in about 1996 to live with her daughter to the present. She became an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Alice Hines, Topeka; Her niece Mrs. Donald (Dorothy) Dunn and her daughters, Tina and Donna Jean Dunn of Terre Haute, Indiana; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Leroy (Myla) Hines of Farmington, New Mexico; her niece, Mrs. Laura Hines Maynard, Farmington, New Mexico; her niece, Mrs. Joanne Hines McCabe, Mount Union, Iowa; her
niece, Mrs. Howard (Lucy) Entwhistle, Cheshire, England; and her niece and nephew, Mrs. Sue Kain and Eric Hines, Lakeland, Florida.

Cremation is planned through the services of Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel Topeka. The Waskom Funeral Home of Cambridge City, Indiana will take care of the grave site internment at Valley Grove Cemetery, south of Milton, Indiana, in Wayne County. A memorial service may be arranged in the summer at the First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis.
