Agilberta "Bertie" Geiger, 89, Topeka, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at her home. She was born January 16, 1920, at Westphalia, KS, the daughter of Frank and Mary Ketter Brands.
She graduated from Burlington High School and attended Emporia State University. She taught elementary school in Coffey County for five years. She worked two years in procurement follow-up for North American Aviation in Inglewood, CA and six years for Southwestern Bell Telephone in the Topeka business office.
Bertie volunteered for the Boy Scouts and was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church most of her life and recently became a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She was also a member of Top Kan Twirlers Square Dance Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Bertie married Alfred Geiger on July 25, 1945, at Sacred Heart Church in Emporia, KS. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Larry Geiger, Overland Park, KS, daughter, Linda Geiger, Houston, TX; two brothers, Clarence Brands, K.C., MO and Omar Brands, Redondo Beach, CA; two grandchildren: Brian Geiger and Laura Geiger.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Aloysius Brands and sister, Virginia Wright.
Bertie will lie in state from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Wed. April 15 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thurs., April 16 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
